Welcome back to the Hype Squad! Today, I’m excited to share a very personal journey with you—the transformative power of solo trips. This is more than just travel advice; it’s a story about personal growth, self-discovery, and confronting life’s challenges head-on. Whether you are contemplating your first solo trip or are a seasoned solo traveler, I hope this story inspires you to take that next step.
Why Solo Trips Are Important
Solo trips have a unique way of connecting us with our innermost selves. They challenge us to step out of our comfort zones and face our fears head-on. For me, the necessity of solo trips became glaringly apparent when my husband started traveling extensively for work. While he enjoyed solo adventures, I found myself feeling increasingly ‘resentful and confined.’
Navigating Resentment
In the early days of our relationship, and especially after having our daughter, Sailor, I struggled with the idea of my husband traveling while I stayed behind. It wasn’t just about the destinations he visited; it was the luxury of alone time, delicious food, and a break from daily responsibilities that stung the most.
One day, my husband posed a pivotal question:
“Who is stopping you from going on solo trips?”
This simple question sparked a realization—no one was holding me back but myself.
I was a stay-at-home mom who felt the need for an excuse or a work-related reason to justify leaving.
Taking the Leap
With this newfound clarity, we implemented a Relationship Check-In system that included scheduling alone time each weekend. Initially, my alone time was confined to working out or taking a long walk—activities that kept me close to home. However, my husband encouraged me to push beyond these boundaries and take trips out of town.
My first solo trip involved visiting friends in Atlanta, where I struggled with the discomfort of being alone in a new place. I stayed in my hotel room for most of the trip, venturing out only for essential experiences, like getting a piece of cake from a local bakery. Each trip after that became easier and more enjoyable, leading me to crave these solitary adventures.
A Pivotal Solo Retreat
One of the most transformative experiences was a solo wellness retreat at Miraval Resort in Tucson, AZ. Initially terrified by the idea of navigating airports, shuttles, and meals alone, I gradually embraced the solitude.
Determined to make this trip about self-reflection, I left my phone in my room and resisted the urge to make new friends, focusing instead on meditating, journaling, and engaging in enriching activities.
During this retreat, I experienced past life regression, participated in a clairvoyant session, and took part in a high-log walking course. These activities not only pushed me out of my comfort zone but also helped me gain deeper insights into myself. Despite initial apprehensions, the trip left a lasting impression on my personal growth.
Embracing Growth Through Discomfort
The essence of solo trips lies in embracing the discomfort that comes with being alone. Growth and self-discovery often reside on the other side of fear. Through my solo adventures, I learned to enjoy my own company, trust myself, and discover new passions. Each trip became a testament to my resilience and ability to navigate life’s challenges independently.
