What’s up Ladies! A new episode of The Hype Squad just dropped ⚡️🎧
EP: 14 | Charli McConnell – “Connecting With Yourself: Unique Journaling Methods That Work” – The Hype Squad
Welcome back, Hype Squad!
Today, I want to dive into a topic that has been a significant part of my journey and coaching practice—journaling.
Throughout my life, I’ve worked with numerous therapists, all of whom have recommended journaling. Despite my numerous attempts, each time I started, I found myself frustrated and eventually gave up. My handwriting couldn’t keep up with my thoughts, my hand would cramp, and I’d eventually abandon my notebook. For a long time, I thought I was alone in this struggle, but now that I’m coaching women, I see that journaling is challenging for many.
Alternative Journaling Methods
Since traditional journaling didn’t work for me, I explored and found alternative methods that might resonate with you too.
Typing Your Journal
One way I’ve adapted journaling is by typing. I can type much faster than I write, and there’s the ease of editing and spell-checking. For those of us who are comfortable with typing, this can be a more efficient and less frustrating way to journal. I even started writing letters to my daughter, Sailor. It’s a mix of storytelling and personal reflection that I send to an email address I’ve created for her. Hopefully, one day, she’ll read these entries and get to know me in a different light.
Video Journaling
Perhaps my favorite method is video journaling. This might sound intimidating, but hear me out. Video journaling is like a refined version of mirror work, a tool used in coaching and mindfulness. Standing in front of a camera and talking about your thoughts can be a powerful way to process emotions.
When I started, it was to practice authenticity in front of the camera for social media. Before I knew it, I was recording 10-15 minute videos, talking through whatever was on my mind. It reminded me of when I was a young driver, pretending to talk to a passenger beside me—processing life’s dramas in the safety of my car.
Video journaling offers similar benefits. Listening and watching yourself later can provide profound insights, helping you understand your emotions better.
How to Start Video Journaling
- Get Comfortable: Begin by practicing in front of a mirror. Become familiar with your facial expressions and voice.
- Set Up Your Space: Find a quiet, private space where you can speak freely.
- Just Talk: Start talking about whatever comes to mind. It doesn’t need to be structured or perfect.
- Review and Reflect: Watching the videos later can help you see your emotions and reactions from a new perspective.
Tools to Facilitate Journaling
I also recommend using tools like the Marco Polo app, a video messaging app that allows for asynchronous communication. I use this with my clients for updates between sessions, but it can also be a great tool for personal journaling. It’s similar to FaceTime but more flexible, allowing you to record and listen at your convenience.
The Importance of Journaling
The essence of journaling is self-discovery and reflection. If traditional journaling works for you, that’s fantastic. For those of you who struggle with it, I hope you find these alternatives helpful. The key is to get to know yourself and commit to your personal growth.
Remember to be kind to yourself and those around you every day.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Stay hyped and keep growing!
With so much love,
Charli
