Welcome back, Hype Squad!

Today, I want to share a deeply personal journey with you. It’s a solo episode where I’ll be discussing my reasons for minimizing alcohol consumption and the impact it has had on my life. This post is dedicated to anyone thinking about making a similar change.

My Alcohol Journey

Initial Thoughts and Decisions

A couple of years ago, I decided to quit drinking. Now, to clarify, I wasn’t struggling with alcohol addiction, nor did I have a history of abuse. I use the term “stop drinking” loosely—I’ll have a drink every few months if I really want one. But for the most part, alcohol doesn’t play a significant role, if any, in my life anymore.

The Struggles of Deciding to Quit

It took years of internal struggle before I finally pulled the plug on regular drinking. Many factors contributed to my hesitation, from friends expressing how much fun I was while drinking, to worries about social acceptance.

Social Pressures and Judgment

From friends to family, there were many social triggers that made quitting difficult. When out in social settings, I often didn’t want to explain why I wasn’t drinking. I didn’t want people to assume I was an alcoholic or pregnant. As a workaround, I started ordering soda water with lime in a glass that resembled a cocktail. It’s wild that alcohol is the only drug or substance that you need to justify not using.

Health and Lifestyle Changes

The Impact of Health Habits

As I started focusing more on my health through clean eating and exercise, I realized how negatively alcohol affected me. From disrupted sleep to wasted calories, and even headaches and mood swings, the drawbacks far outweighed the fleeting enjoyment.

Comparing Then and Now

College drinking days were immensely different; it was fun back then. However, as I grew older, the experience became less enjoyable and more of a burden. The fun was gone, replaced by next-day regrets and physical discomfort.

Setting Boundaries and Building Resilience

Friends and Their Reactions

Setting boundaries around alcohol consumption affected my social life. Some friends accepted it, while others faded away. The ones who couldn’t support my decision to drink less revealed themselves as seasonal friends and I found it necessary to set boundaries with them for personal growth.

Getting Thicker Skin

Developing resilience was crucial. Initially, I’d cave to social pressure and have a drink just to fit in, only to regret it later. Over time, experiencing these negative emotions helped me develop a thicker skin and a stronger resolve to stick to my boundaries.

Support Systems

Addressing Partners’ Drinking Habits

Discussing a partner’s drinking habits requires a high level of communication. Setting up the conversation in a receptive, balanced way is crucial—make it about your needs, not their habits. Using ‘I’ statements, instead of ‘You’, can foster a less defensive, more open dialogue.

Practical Tips and Tools

Mocktails and Social Strategies

For those in social settings: mocktails can be a great alternative. They satisfy the social craving for a “drink” without containing alcohol. This small change can make a huge difference in staying committed to your boundaries without drawing attention.

Family Gatherings and Boundaries

Family gatherings can also be challenging. Setting firm boundaries and understanding your reasons for doing so are crucial steps. Remembering your “why” helps reinforce your choices when faced with pressure.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Celebrating Small Wins

This journey has been an immense exercise in self-discovery and boundary-setting. My greatest achievement has been the ability to set and maintain these boundaries around alcohol.

My skin got thicker, my boundaries got firmer, and the social interactions became easier.

I want to reassure those who find themselves on a similar path—you are not alone. Whether it’s cutting down or quitting completely, it’s about making decisions that prioritize your wellbeing. Remember, the people who truly care will support you through these changes.
