Welcome back, Hype Squad!

Life’s journey is multifaceted, with every individual’s path being uniquely challenging and rewarding. Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Christa Myrick, a dynamic entrepreneur, devoted wife, and mother of three, to discuss her remarkable journey through entrepreneurship and the balancing act that comes with motherhood.

Our conversation flowed effortlessly, covering everything from the intricacies of running a business to the unexpected joy of reading smut novels (oh we go there)

Finding Her Entrepreneurial Spirit

Christa’s journey into the world of entrepreneurship didn’t follow the traditional narrative. Coming from a family with stable careers in low-risk fields, she found herself navigating uncharted waters. “I wasn’t raised by entrepreneurs,” Christa shares. “My parents chose great fields, but they were very low-risk. I didn’t learn entrepreneurship from anyone, and I also didn’t feel it was something I was born with.”

Contrary to many entrepreneurial legends, Christa wasn’t the kid running lemonade stands or hustling her way through school projects. Instead, she was painfully shy and fond of following the rules. The idea of stepping out on her own took time to cultivate. It was through years of experience in human resources and the realization that she could no longer ignore her calling that Christa took the leap. “I am proud of what I’ve achieved, largely because I recognize the areas I needed to grow and how I decided to go after my dreams,” she says.

The Balance Myth

One of the most recurring themes in our conversation was the idea of balance, or rather, the myth of it. Christa emphasizes, “I don’t think there’s a real balance. Everyone’s life is different. It’s more like a pendulum. Sometimes you’re more focused on business because of urgent needs, and then it swings the other way, and you’re more focused on family.”

Christa recounts her first time stepping away from work for an extended vacation with her family. “My family and I went on a two-week vacation together, and I was able to leave the business behind.” Such moments of stepping away, she reveals, are essential for long-term success and personal well-being.

Christa credits much of her ability to juggle her many roles to having a supportive partner. In her marriage, tasks are divided based on each person’s strengths. Her husband manages the household finances, while she manages the business’s finances. “You can’t do it all,” Christa reiterates. Her husband picks up the slack where needed, whether it’s household chores or taking care of the children. This teamwork is crucial for any family looking to support a working mom or dad.

The Role of Outsourcing

Another significant conversation point was the role of outsourcing. For Christa, hiring help wasn’t just a convenience, but a necessity. “Outsourcing anything I can is essential. I don’t clean my home, even though I love a clean house. My time is valuable, and I need to prioritize where I can make the most impact,” she explains.

From cleaning services to business development managers, Christa quickly realized the value of hiring help. “It really frees you up to focus on what you do best,” she advises. “In the beginning, you may wear all the hats, but as soon as you’re financially able, start hiring out tasks that don’t require your direct expertise.”

The Constant Battle with Anxiety

While Christa’s professional achievements are impressive, she’s equally candid about her personal struggles with anxiety. “I come from a family with a history of mental disorders. Dealing with debilitating anxiety has been a major part of my life,” she reveals.

It’s a continuous battle, and Christa acknowledges that she’s good at hiding it. “Sometimes I feel like it’d be really easy for me to just be a hot mess,” she shares candidly. “But I keep working at it, refusing to let it steal my joy or define me.” Christa’s transparency about her mental health struggles resonates with many, proving that success doesn’t require perfection, only perseverance and resilience.

The Escape of Smut Novels

In a delightful twist, our conversation took a light-hearted turn as we delved into one of Christa & Charli’s favorite pastimes: reading smut novels. A surprising but delightful admission, Christa explained that these books offer her a much-needed mental escape. “It’s the one brainless thing I do,” she says with a laugh. “I know it’s predictable, but it’s a safe space. You know there’s going to be a happy ending.”

For Christa, smut novels aren’t just an escape—they also revitalize her marriage. “Sometimes my husband will notice that I’ve been reading and he’ll playfully ask, ‘So, what’s happening in your book now?’ It’s a fun way to reconnect and keep things exciting.”

Reading has indeed provided a unique way for Christa to unwind from her hectic life, offering emotional catharsis and even spicing up her personal life. It’s clear that even dynamic entrepreneurs need their guilty pleasures.

The conversation with Christa Myrick was nothing short of inspiring. Her journey demonstrates that entrepreneurship is not just about taking risks; it’s about understanding oneself, setting priorities, and continuously learning. She balances her roles with grace, showing both vulnerability and strength as she navigates the complexities of family life and business.

Christa leaves us with a powerful takeaway: Success doesn’t come from having everything figured out from the start. It comes from growing into your role, leaning into the uncertainties, and making the best of each situation. Whether it’s hiring help, managing mental health, or finding joy in smut novels, Christa reminds us that every piece of the puzzle is crucial for the bigger picture.
