Hey mama,
Summer is here, and if you’re anything like me, you’re juggling a million things—work, snacks, sunscreen, swim team, Target runs, and trying to make memories in between meltdowns.
Yesterday with my daughter Sailor was one of those days. She was yelling, being super disrespectful, and honestly acting in ways that would normally earn her a serious talk or a consequence.
But here’s what I knew deep down—my girl was just exhausted.
She’s been out of her usual school routine. Bedtimes have been all over the place. Early wake-ups, summer stimulation, and go-go-go vibes had her running on empty.
Instead of reacting with discipline or a lecture, I did what I’d want someone to do for me when I’m clearly not my best: I gave her grace.
I didn’t make it a moment. I made it quiet.
We rode in the car silently. She kept asking if she was in trouble. I said, “No, we’ll talk about it later.” She wanted to swim, play with friends—I just gently delayed every request. Swim team first. Grocery store first. Dinner first. Shower first.
And by the time bedtime rolled around? She was calm. I said, “Let’s get some good sleep. Tomorrow we’ll talk.”
Guess what? We never needed the “talk.” She woke up her usual self.
Here’s the thing—kids don’t always need a lecture. Sometimes they need rest. Recalibration. A quiet car ride. A soft mom.
And you, mama, have that instinct. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it.
So this summer, when your kid is losing it, before you lose it too—pause.
Breathe. Ask yourself, “What would I need if I felt like that?”
Grace goes a long way—for them and for you.
You’re doing amazing. Keep going.
xo,
Charli
